The State MathCounts competition was held March 3, 2007 at Clemson University in Brackett Hall with 105 students and 28 schools from across the state participating.
“MathCounts is a program for sixth through eighth graders to show their competence and skills in mathematics,” said Marguerite McClam, PE, State Coordinator for the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers, MathCounts sponsor. These teams competed in local competition in seven areas around the state. All of these Mathletes were winners before they came to Clemson because they had to win their local competition before advancing to the state level.
The top four individual winners plus the coach from the winning school team represent South Carolina at the National competition in Fort Worth, Texas, May 11-13, 2007.
Taking first place in the individual competition was Sage Price from Crayton Middle School (Columbia). The Second place winner was David Zhang from Buist Academy for Advance Studies (Charleston), and the third place went to William Zhang from Buist Academy for Advance Studies. Velina Kozaveva from Dutch Fork Middle (Irmo) placed fourth.
The 2007 National team coach is Judy Blitch from Buist Academy for Advance Studies in Charleston. Coach Blitch begins working with the team to prepare them for the national competition.
