Engineers Sent to Governor for Appointment to SC State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers
The SC Council of Engineering and Surveying Societies is charged by law to recommend engineers and surveyors to the Governor for appointment to the Registration Board, and Professor Dennis Fallon, PE, PhD, of The Citadel and Mr. Timothy W. Rickborn, PE, of Mount Pleasant were recommended to the Governor.
Dr. Fallon, if appointed takes Dr. Cecil Huey’s position on the Registration Board. Traditionally, one of the seven professional positions on the board has been held by an engineering professor. Mr. Rickborn assumes Mr. Andy Kinghorn’s seat on the board if the Governor appoints him. Both Dr. Huey and Mr. Kinghorn did not seek reappointment.
The Registration Board has five seats for registered engineers, two seats for registered surveyors and a seat for a lay person.
SCCESS interviewed six registered engineers interested in the two positions. After careful consideration the council decided upon Dr. Fallon and Mr. Rickborn.
SCCESS Sends Greg Parsons to Governor for Reappointment to SC Building Code Council
The SC Council of Engineering and Surveying Societies met last month to interview candidates to the SC Building Code Council. Four interviews were conducted via conference call with the candidates. One candidate, Greg Parsons, Builders Engineering Corporation, currently holds the designated Registered Engineer position on the Building Code Council.
After the interviews were held, SCCESS determined to recommend Parsons for another 5-year term. He has represented engineers well on the Building Code Council.
SCSPE Brings Project Management to Upstate
The South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers has brought a sell out crowd to the Project Management Seminar in Greenville on November 16, 2011. With only 50 spots available, the seminar was offered to all registered engineers in the state, and the seminar filled up quickly.
The SCSPE Fall Meeting was a brainstorm of the SCSPE Board of Directors brought up at the 2011 SCSPE Planning Retreat. With most of the PDH seminars offered by SCSPE taking place in Columbia, SC or at the South Carolina Engineering Conference & Trade Show, Executive Director Joe Jones thought offering something to the largest engineering market region would be a good idea.
Having success in the past with the SCSPE Leadership Development Project, SCSPE brought in Project Management master mind Howard Birnberg. Birnberg’s presentation is very interactive with the participants, so SCSPE had to limit participation, and the seminar sold out quickly.
SCSPE intends on making the Fall Upstate Meeting an annual event. If you have any recommendations on seminars you think would be a good fit for the Piedmont Fall Meeting please send your ideas to Adam B. Jones at admin@jma-associations.com.
A Mindless Break during a Grueling Day
As you probably remember, the last thing on your mind the day you take the PE exam is what you are having for lunch. SCSPE makes this a mindless decision and gives examinees three options: Cheese, Pepperoni, and Alfredo Cheese Pizza. For desert they can have apples, bananas, and an oatmeal cream pie.
It’s the little things that can make a day much easier, so SCSPE twice a year sets up shop at the Jamil Temple and brings pizza. On October 28, 2011 Michael Sheu, PE, Michelle Motchos, PE, David McNeice, PE and Adam Jones feed examinees. “It’s just one less thing for them to worry about,” said Sheu. Past President Michael Sheu has been heading this operation for a few years now, and SCSPE can see the reward of its efforts on every face as they come through the line.
